TRAVEL // Adelaide, Australia

Friday, 29 January 2016

Hey there!

After Perth, I hopped on a fight to Adelaide to spend Christmas with some family. It's just a little bit crazy how long that flight was as Australia is just such a large country. I know that sounds ridiculous to say, but it really is. I went a little over half way across the country and it took about 4 hours. It only takes double that for me to drive from Essex to Scotland. I just cannot wrap my head around it #sorrynotsorry.

I spent the week staying with family about an hour out of Adelaide itself. It's in quite an interesting location because 20 minutes down the road you're in a modern shopping centre and 20 minutes the opposite direction takes you to a quaint little village which reminded me of that town in the Hannah Montana movie (I know you know the one).

On our first day the weather was far from what you expect of sunny Adelaide. We missed the heatwave by hours and so had a nice cool day for some exploring. We went to the Barossa Valley packed with wineries (that I did not go to - boo!) where I hugged some massive sculptures and tried to be the best art critic I could be. All of that exploring meant it was time for food and I ended up with the biggest chicken burger I had ever seen in my life. I just stared at it for a couple of minutes and contemplated my fate (a.k.a. a food coma). After that we had a little stroll through Angaston and resisted all of the delicious cakes in the windows - just.

Once it warmed up a little bit, all 9 of us (including the dogs!) trekked up to the Shack on the Murray River. They call it a shack but it's more of a mansion which they built by hand. You've got to admit I have some talented family. We spent some time in the sun, or on my report, before heading out for a day on the Murray. Sure, it doesn't look like the most beautiful water in the world but it's darn fun off the back of a boat. We water-skied, held on for dear life in a ring and board and tried our hardest not to fall in. Spoiler - of course I fell in! It was just the loveliest day and made me really want to live somewhere I could just hop to a river or beach and get the boat out. Well, that's some life goals for you!

As it was right on top of Christmas, I didn't get to see as much of the surrounding area as I'd have liked. We had Christmas shopping to do, and it seemed like an ideal time to get some of my thesis done, and who wants to move from the sofa on Christmas Day? Well, not me! On Christmas Eve we went to go see Star Wars (so good!) before looking at all the beaches nearby. Sure, they aren't anywhere near as nice as the beaches in Perth but they sure are Instagrammable. Of course, in 40 degree heat all of the cold drinks were needed. You cannot beat an iced lemonade.

On the last day I finally got to head into Adelaide city itself. Starting outwith the Adelaide Oval - because my Dad likes his cricket - we just had a wander before hitting the Christmas sales. I wanted to take all of Typo home but stopped with just a water bottle which I do not leave the house without. Their train station is gorgeous by the way and was oh so festive.

So that was my trip to Adelaide! We rented a car and drove out of the city along the Great Ocean Road to see all of the beaches we could possibly see. It was super lovely seeing my family I haven't seen in a few years and seeing yet another city. Take me back to the river please!

Have you ben to Adelaide? Where are your top places to go? Let me know!

  1. Love these photos - I always feel like it must be really strange for it to be so warm and sunny during Christmas. Also, good on you for doing some of your thesis while on holiday - commitment goals!

    1. Thank you so much! It was weird but quite nice.....I think. I ended up doing quite well on the first draft of my thesis so all of that beach time I lost was worth it at least!
