LIFESTYLE // Battlesbridge Antiques

Monday, 4 August 2014

Hello!
I am very fortunate to live where I live. I am just 40 minutes out of London and there is plenty around me anyway. I always go to London if I have nothing to do but randomly remembered about Battlesbridge antiques a few days ago and had to go. It is just a little village which has tea rooms (three I think?) and lots of little vintage and antique stores. The vintage clothing store was unfortunately closed but I had a little rummage through the main store and found all sorts of trinkets and interesting bits and pieces. I'm not going to lie, it was a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon.

(warning: picture heavy)

I popped into the outside tea room for a pot of tea and lemon drizzle cake (which was scrummy!). It was very reasonably priced and the tea was the best I have had in a long while. I now really want to go on Bargain Hunt - I think I'd enjoy it way too much. I'm sure my Nan would do it with me although she has the view 'if I don't like it, it'll probably make a lot of money' and I'm not sure we'd agree on much (or anything for that matter).

Anyway, if you find yourself in Southern Essex (around Chelmsford) and you love to have a wander around and look at trinkets why not look into visiting Battlesbridge? Sure, you couldn't spend all day there but if you wanted to spend a couple of hours feeling like Ariel in The Little Mermaid why not?

Have you been to Battlesbridge or have anywhere similar near you? Let me know!

  6. I love places like this, so much fun to explore and find interesting things. We have a small retro clothing shop where I live, and I love just popping in and having a look. I love those suitcases, although would definitely rather one with wheels haha!

    1. I really want to find a few more places like this! I'm not sure I would use one of those suitcases purely on the chance that it could burst open and the whole plane would see my underwear on the conveyer belt (just a tad embarrassing and very likely to happen to me haha!)

  8. I live in Chelmsford but I barely know any other surrounding places - terrible I know! I'll definitely have to have a look into this though, the whole tea room kinda thing is something which I love, mainly for the home made cakes ;) I'm not a fan of tea at all, but the last time I had one was with a cream tea in Cormwall - god damn those things are good! xx

  12. I love little places like this.

Have you been to Brick lane in London? I also live almost 40 minutes away from London, and its definitely worth a visit. Its full of vintage, one off shops like this although some a little pricey. It has the best place for little tea rooms/ coffee shops. I went into one and it was full of fairy lights and there were people in there playing live music just to jam and I payed 96p for the biggest and best mug of tea which was perfectly hot. Mm to die for.

Antique places wise, there's quite a few places in the olney area or Potterspury with lots of hidden gems.

Just a pre-warning when buying vintage books, I got an obsession with buying them a while ago, because they're so old they have little bugs in them. These little bug/mites spread to all of your good books- this ruined me as a lit student. So if you buy them you can make a spray to kill the bastards so they dont ruin your life like they did mine.... R.I.P fully noted copy of Wuthering Heights.

    1. Thank you for the recommendations! :)
Of all the places I have been in London I have never been to Brick Lane - it kills me! I'm dying to go!
I have never had that issue with vintage books. I can't believe ones you bought had bugs in. That's pretty gross! I tend to get them from charity shops. There is the most amazing one in Maidstone in the lanes that has lots of first editions and copies with notes to the first owners in them and I have never had issues with those. How could those bugs do it to Wuthering Heights of all books?! That should be illegal.
