LIFESTYLE // Autumn things that make me happy

Monday, 19 October 2015

Hello there!
After a weekend filled with CV writing and job searching (blergh, and double blergh) I decided that my Monday needed to be filled with as much positivity as I could find. Therefore, I wrote a list, as a brilliant procrastination tool, of the things that make me happy during Autumn. Whether it be cold, crisp days, mellow music or the return of hoodies without strange looks - there is just so much to love about the months coming up to Christmas.

1. Having a purpose in life
Well, this may not apply for those of you in full time employment (go you!) but the return of Autumn means that I actually have productive to-do lists. I can wake up in the morning thinking 'yes - I'm going to get something potentially important done today' which makes it that little bit easier to get out of bed. Being in a research lab during the week has really made this point important. Who knows if the experiment I plan to do today will bring significant results that could change the world (well, it's unlikely but you never know!)

2. Boots and scarves and coats
I wear boots constantly from September onwards (well at least I used to before a 40 hour lab week - trainers are my friend now!). I love wearing a chunky jumper, chunky boots, jacket and thick scarf. Yes, preferably with a vanilla latte in hand. I love being able to layer and wear all of my favourite clothes at the same time. It just gets boring wearing sandals and dresses in the summer.

3. Autumn Playlists
When you wake up early and it seems like no-one else is awake, you cannot beat a mellow playlist. At this time of year I listen to crazy amounts of Ed Sheehan, James Bay, Gabrielle Aplin, Amber Run, Lewis Watson and Ben Howard. My playlists have very few fast and upbeat songs on them and I love it.

4. The return of the hot drink
I love an iced coffee as much as the next girl but there is nothing better than walking down the street with a warm vanilla latte in hand. My obsession with van lattes peaks at around November and then I move towards the mocha and finally americano because I have no student loan left (oops!). Either way, it's nice to be able to hold a drink, feel comforted, and not have to worry about your fingers falling off. Just saying.

5. Dark lipstick
Finally my wine and dark red lipsticks can rejoice! Again, working in a lab doesn't allow me the normal amount of wear they'd usually get but all weekend the wine lipsticks come out. I am living on MAC's Dubonnet right now but my Kate Moss 107 has gone missing and I need it back in my life.

6. Crunchy leaves
Need I say more? Who doesn't love to run and jump on crunchy leaves (preferably with a vanilla latte in hand)? From the colours to that ever so satisfying crunch - you cannot beat the changing leaves.

7. Wooly hats
Surely I am not the only person who enjoys wearing a beanie when it gets a little chilly? I stupidly lost two of my favourites and cannot find a new one to save my life. Why are they so expensive this year? If someone wants to point a well priced but good quality beanie my way (preferably with non-furry pom pom) feel free!

8. Early nights and candles galore
I don't like walking home in the dark but I do love lighting a candle as soon as I get in. I have been a little obsessed with candles this year and cannot get enough of having one lit whenever I am in my room. I bought some with my initials on and I cannot wait to burn through those so I can get some tea lights or votives to put in them instead. Yankee candles, come at me!

So these are just a few of things that make me happy about Autumn. Is there anything that makes you particularly happy about Autumn? Let me know!

  1. I love autumn so much, mostly because the leaves turn pretty colours. We have a bank of trees at the end of the garden, and it's nice getting to look out the window every morning and see them looking all pretty.

Also, you cannot go wrong with hats and scarfs, and hot drinks.
